The dead man on the living room floor has been there for a few days, but he was obviously murdered. Karl follows the evidence where ever it goes. This time the detective has his work cut out for him because nothing is what it seems. Too many theories, too many victims, and too many persons of interest.
Based on a real-life event, Willis Lamm relates the story of a California crime spree with a trail of victims. Karl Schmidt, who happens to look a lot like Lamm, tells the fascinating side of these fictionalized events in a first-person narrative. It's the underbelly of police work that you wanted to see.
Prologue
The light through the front window curtain cast a weak orange glow onto the dark porch, outlining the few steps that ran up from the old, cracked sidewalk to the white bungalow farmhouse. The wooden front porch floor gave slightly under the weight of footsteps and the unlocked front door opened easily. The interior of the house was quiet except for the distant sound of water running. The air inside was warm and moist, and laden with the scent of iron.
The tranquility was shattered by the ring tone from a mobile phone.
“We have a homicide in Rockaway.”
